What is a Half-Pitch DIP Switch Used For?

A DIP switch is a miniature electromechanical device that’s mounted onto a printed circuit board and used to configure settings on electronic devices and applications. You’ll come across a variety of DIP switches defined by their method of actuation — slide, piano or rotary — but what is a half-pitch DIP switch and what is it used for?

What is a Half-Pitch DIP Switch?

A half-pitch DIP switch is a smaller-sized version of a standard DIP switch with less spacing between pins. A half-pitch DIP switch features spacing of 1.27mm (0.050″) between adjacent pins while the standard-sized spacing is twice as much at 2.54mm (0.10″). This design allows for a higher density of DIP switches to be mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB), a feature that’s beneficial for applications and devices where space is limited, such as handheld electronics, modems and industrial controls.

What is a Half-Pitch DIP Switch Used For?

Half-pitch DIP switches are generally required in smaller consumer electronics like smartwatches, fitness trackers, glucose monitors and remote controls. They can also be found in embedded systems and microcontroller boards, sensor modules, network interface cards, routers, signal converters and rack-mounted or modular telecom gear. In the medical industry, they’re used in diagnostic tools, portable lab analyzers and implantable or wearable medical tech.

What is a Low Profile DIP Switch?

A standard-sized DIP switch typically has a height of 3.5mm. However, a low profile DIP switch is typically either just 2.2mm or 1.5mm, making them suitable for low-profile electronic devices.
