In certain environments, the basic action of a finger actuating an electromechanical switch can lead to the flow of electrostatic discharge (ESD) through the switch and integrated circuit. ESD is harmful to the life and performance of electronic components, eventually leading to potential interface damages, burnouts or ruptures. The purpose of a ground (GND) terminal on a tact switch is to act as a shield against electrostatic discharge.
Tactile switches with a ground termination option, where the circuit is designed so that static electricity is released from the ground terminal, are used when reducing the risk of damaging the circuit due to static electricity is needed.
