What are IK Ratings for Electromechanical Switches?

When designing equipment for public, industrial, or outdoor environments, electrical performance is only part of the equation. Switches must also withstand physical abuse, accidental impacts, and harsh operating conditions. That’s where IK ratings come into play.

What Are IK Ratings?

An IK rating is an international standard that measures a product’s resistance to mechanical impact. Defined by IEC 62262, the rating scale ranges from IK00 (no impact protection) to IK10 (the highest standard rating), which represents resistance to a 20-joule impact.

The higher the IK rating, the greater the switch’s ability to withstand impacts from tools, vandalism, accidental strikes, or other physical abuse. For example:

  • IK07 = 2 joules of impact resistance
  • IK08 = 5 joules of impact resistance
  • IK09 = 10 joules of impact resistance
  • IK10 = 20 joules of impact resistance

Why Are IK Ratings Important?

Improved Durability

Switches installed in demanding environments are often exposed to repeated physical contact and occasional impacts. Selecting an appropriately rated IK switch helps ensure reliable operation throughout the product’s life.

Protection Against Vandalism

Public kiosks, ticketing machines, access-control systems, EV chargers, and transportation equipment can be targets for intentional abuse. IK-rated anti-vandal switches are specifically designed to resist these impacts and remain functional.

Reduced Maintenance Costs

A more rugged switch means fewer failures, less downtime, and lower replacement costs. This is particularly valuable in equipment that is difficult or expensive to service.

Increased User Safety

Damaged switches can create reliability and safety concerns. Choosing a switch with a proven impact rating helps maintain operational integrity.
