A washable tactile switch is sealed to protect the component from contaminants while offering enhanced durability, reliability and easy maintenance. Washable tactile switches are designed to be regularly cleaned and are used in electronics where cleanliness and hygiene are critical. Accordingly, you’ll likely find washable tactile switch products in the medical, food, fitness and personal care markets.
So, how do you define/identify a washable tactile switch, and how do you know if a switch is washable or sealed? A water-wash or process-sealed switch is sealed to meet the minimum requirements of IP67. With that IP67 rating, this means the switch is entirely dust-tight and will pass a water submersion test at 40″ (1m) for up to 30 minutes.
However, due to the variables encountered during the washing process, IP67 does not necessarily ensure that water cannot enter the switch. If the wash involves high-pressure jets, detergents/chemicals, extreme temperatures or extended immersion at greater depths, you may need a switch rated IP68 or IP69K. Having said that, an IP67 switch will withstand a typical washing process.
